Sahara Financial Ledger · Process

The full process

The research, personas and flows behind Sahara Financial Ledger. The case study covers the decisions; this is the work underneath them.

02 — Discovery & Research

Money is for something

The framing that shaped everything: nobody wants a balance. They want a camera, a deposit, a year off. The balance is only interesting in relation to that.

A goal makes the numbers legible
“You have £84,240” means little. “You reach the Leica four months earlier” is a decision someone can act on this afternoon.
Trade-offs beat warnings
People will cut discretionary spend willingly when shown what it buys them. The same cut framed as a budget breach reads as a telling-off.
Compounding is invisible
Interest is the strongest argument for patience and the least felt. It has to be shown as a figure, at a chosen term, not buried in small print.
AI needs an anchor
An assistant attached to a specific number is useful. The same model behind an empty chat box is a blank-page problem.

03 — Defining the Opportunity

Reorganise the app around the target

If the goal is the point, it cannot live in a tab. The opportunity was to make every surface - dashboard, planner, allocator, transfers - answer to the same target.

01
Lead with movement
The greeting states the direction of travel before any balance appears.
02
Attach AI to numbers
Each AI touchpoint hangs off a specific figure and produces a specific recommendation, never a general conversation.
03
Make compounding tangible
A term selector, the annual index APY, and a maturity figure rendered large enough to feel.
04
Demote the transaction list
Recent spend is present but deliberately the quietest surface in the whole app.

04 — Design Strategy

Warm, quiet,
and pointed at one thing.

Private-wealth interfaces default to either cold navy-and-teal fintech or gold-plated luxury pastiche. Sahara takes a third route: warm sand, bone white, and a serif reserved for the figures that matter.

01
Set the emotional register
Warm neutrals and generous 32px radii, so an app about money feels calm rather than transactional or ostentatious.
02
Reserve the serif
Playfair Display appears only on figures and section titles. Manrope carries everything functional, which is what keeps the serif meaningful.
03
Anchor each AI moment
Affordability insight sits on the goal; portfolio synthesis sits on the allocator. Both produce a number, not a paragraph.
04
Rank the surfaces
Goal and growth first, cards and safety second, raw transactions last - the opposite of a conventional banking app.
